What is Papaya Music?
Papaya Music is a consortium of musicians, producers and researchers who want to rescue traditional popular composers from oblivion, encourage young people to go back to their roots, inspire new musical forms and ensure that the artists receive fairer remuneration for their work.
The seed of this musical genealogy is Costa Rican pianist, Manuel Obregón, and his successful experiment in forming Papaya Orchestra, the first Central American orchestra that combines traditional instruments and rhythms with urban music and modern influences.
The other members of Papaya Music are art curator Virginia Pérez-Ratton, researcher Yazmín Ross and filmmaker-producer Luciano Capelli.
The Papaya Music Collection was launched in December 2003, when we burst upon the market with ten titles. Although based in San José, Costa Rica, we are interested in expanding to the other countries of Central America.
